The “Book of the House of Gu” cast including the two leads, Lee Seung Gi and Suzy, gathered together for the first script reading session on February 1

“Book of the House of Gu” will air in April after the current drama “Horse Doctor” ends. “Book of the House of Gu” will be directed by the hit maker, Shin Woo Chul PD, who also worked on “A Gentleman’s Dignity,” “Secret Garden,” “Lovers of Prague,” and “Lovers of Paris.” Writer Kang Eun Kyung is also among the staff and is famous for working on “Baker King Kim Tak Gu.”

Cast members including Lee Seung Gi, Suzy, Lee Sung Jae, Lee Yeon Hee, Choi Jin Hyuk, Jung Hye Young, Uhm Hyo Sup, Yoo Yeon Suk, Lee Yoo Bi, and Kim Hee Won attended the script reading.

Lee Seung Gi and Suzy will be taking on the challenge of acting in a sageuk (historical fiction) drama for the first time. After ending the script reading, Lee Seung Gi commented, “I can’t wait for my journey as Choi Kang Chi,” showing his energy and passion for his next project.

The staff commented, “With a great writer, director and cast, we will try our best to make the best drama,” and “Rather than quickly produced scripts and long shoots, we will try to show the viewers a high-quality drama.”

“Book of the House of Gu” has started shooting in February and will air in April.

Lee Yeon-hee cast in Gu Family Book

poiler

Er? Okay, so honestly, news of Lee Yeon-hee possibly joining the cast of the Lee Seung-gi/Suzy fantasy sageuk Gu Family Book had me going: Huh? What? WHY? Because for one, not a huge fan, and also that’s two female leads, and Lee Yeon-hee trumps Suzy on the leading lady scale. That would make me unhappy. (Not that either has extensive range, but Suzy has presence and charm and can be hilarious at times, while Lee Yeon-hee is always sleepy, sad, or sleepy-sad.)

But the role is being described as a “special appearance,” which usually means an extended guest cameo of sorts, lasting a few episodes tops. So it’s definitely not lead territory, but they’re being careful to say that the size of the role and the length of her arc has yet to be decided. What’s with all the mystery?

She’s still considering the role, and there isn’t much information on what the part is. My go-to guess would be first love, or maybe she’ll be the gumiho who starts the bloodline of half-human half-gumiho people? All we know so far about this show is stuff about the hero, which is annoying since I’d like to know something about the women in this drama other than “They’re in it.”

Seung-gi plays Choi Kang-chi (a pun meaning “strongest”), a man born half-gumiho who fights against his nature to live as close to being human as possible. It’ll be a fusion martial arts action historical drama, with one major twist in the hero who’s half-monster. I’m excited about the premise, and just hoping for some high production value to back it all up.

Gu Family Book follows Horse Healer and premieres in April on MBC.

Lee Seung-gi and Suzy’s new drama scores time slot

ler

Looks like spring will be the season for gumihos. The new fusion fantasy sageuk starring Lee Seung-gi and Suzy has confirmed a spot on MBC’s upcoming lineup, and is set to follow Horse Healer on Mondays/Tuesdays. That puts the premiere in late March or early April, given Horse’s 50-episode run. The drama is called Gu Family Book (it’s likely punny in that the gu means literally “nine,” as in nine tails) and Lee Seung-gi will play a twist on the gumiho legend and be a half-gumiho, half-human hero.

The descriptions keep referring to him as “half-beast,” like we might somehow get the wrong impression that because he’s playing a gumiho it emasculates him in some way (gumihos, or nine-tailed foxes are traditionally female). But uh, we geddit. He’s a dude. And it’s a myth, so please, be my guest and turn those gender roles upside-down. We like ‘em better that way.

It’s really the one major hope I have for this show — that it has an idea about the mythology it wants to create. ‘Cause a fun new mythical universe is always welcome in my book. There’s little information about the heroine, but the hero was born half-beast, and will set out on a quest to become human. We’re already told that he can’t, “but he fights to live more like a person than anyone else.” Aw. It’ll be a lighthearted martial arts action drama, which sounds like a great ol’ time. Bring on the swashbuckling laughs.

Directing is PD Shin Woo-chul, of Secret Garden and A Gentleman’s Dignity, and writing is Kang Eun-kyung of Baker King, Man of Honor, and Dalja’s Spring. I like the idea of a new breed of drama hero entirely, one that might have to fight his evil carnivorous nature to be a better man. It’s like all the good narrative tropes of vampire lore, without all the attendant baggage. Hope it’s a winner.

Lee Seung-gi and Suzy cast in fantasy sageuk

iler

Well you know I’m a happy camper if puppy’s back in dramaland. Lee Seung-gi (The King 2 Hearts) and Suzy (Big) have been cast in a new drama, a fantasy sageuk called Gu Family Book. That’s a rough estimate on the title, since we have no hanja to go on yet, but the Gu refers to gumiho, a mythical nine-tailed fox, almost always in mythology a woman. But this time, Seung-gi will be playing a half-gumiho / half-human. Seung-gi, isn’t going from gumiho’s boyfriend to gumiho-boy kinda retreading old ground?

It’s at least a sageuk, which means it’ll be completely different from the modern rom-com My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. I’ll just think of him as Miho and Dae-woong’s baby. The drama will be helmed by PD Shin Woo-chul, of Secret Garden, A Gentleman’s Dignity and writer Kang Eun-kyung of Baker King, Man of Honor, Dalja’s Spring.

Suzy is still “considering the role favorably.” There’s not much information on her character yet, just that she’s up for the heroine. Seung-gi has reportedly been attached to the project from the start, and has confirmed the lead role. All we know is that he’ll be playing a half-man-half-beast, in his first historical drama to date. I… cannot picture him with a mane of glory. Does not compute. In danger of fire hazard. You know I love the boy, but sometimes hair is his enemy. Can he be a half-gumiho who hides his true identity while living as a nobleman? ‘Cause pretty topknot with hat and hanbok sounds right up his alley.

I think it’s an adorable pairing, and while Suzy does leave some emoting to be desired, she’s better with every role, and I honestly just like her in everything. I dunno… she’s just plain likable. It probably helps that she’s played some funny characters, because comedy is her stronger suit. I hope there’s some funny to be had in this new show, because that’s my favorite mode for both these actors.

The series is aiming for an early 2013 broadcast, and is currently in talks with MBC for a time slot.
